Guide to Gluten-Free

There’s a lot of terminology when it comes to eating plant-based, but SoBe Vegan is your friend when navigating the world of healthier food near you. “Gluten-free” is a term you may be seeing often on food packaging and restaurant menus.

Eating more gluten-free products has become a popular pathway to a healthier life. Gluten-free eating used to be much more nuanced, but its increasing popularity is changing the food industry. Changing your diet doesn’t have to be drastic.

But what is gluten? Gluten is a term that’s used to describe a family of proteins that are found in certain grains. This includes wheat, rye, barley, and triticale, among others. Gluten helps give these grains their texture, and it gives structure to foods like bread.

There are lots of people who have sensitivities to gluten, specifically those with celiac disease. Making the conscious choice to remove gluten from your diet is not just for people with medical concerns. Avoiding gluten may sound difficult, but there are hundreds of thousands of people doing it daily.

Eliminating gluten does not mean giving up great tasting food. Over time, it will become easier to adapt to this change in diet, making it much simpler to find what great gluten-free foods work for you.

What foods don’t have gluten in them? We could talk for days about the list of tasty foods without gluten in them. This includes rice, quinoa, oatmeal, fruits, vegetables, beans, herbs, and spices. And the list goes on.

It is important to remember that when a food is gluten-free, that does not always mean it is healthy. There are dozens of great-tasting gluten-free options, but just because gluten-free is on the label does not necessarily mean it is a healthier choice. A package of gluten-free candy may still have as much fat and sugar as a regular bag of candy.

Still, gluten-free diets are still as delicious as ever. SoBe Vegan has an array of menu options for people hoping to avoid gluten. From our healthy salads for lunch to our scrumptious breakfast sandwiches, we have tons of great meals without gluten!
